Being born and raised in a mid-sized town such as Kamloops, there are many stories to tell. I attended South Sahali Elementary which is one of two French immersion schools in town, giving me my ability to speak fluent French. From here, I attended South Kamloops Secondary where I graduated top of my class as an honour roll student on principal’s list, as well as I was given the honour of being named valedictorian and relayed a speech to fellow peers in my graduating class of 2022.
I’m currently in my third year of bachelors in journalism, exploring every opportunity I’m given access to. I’ve always had a passion for writing and never knew how I could turn this into a career, until I discovered journalism and communications and the opportunities for careers that can arise from these degrees. Just this year, I was given the opportunity to work with a non profit to develop their website and write for it, which was a dream come true and my first step forward.
Public relations was a completely new area of expertise for me. I knew the term and had little understanding to what the job entails, until I took my first PR course. It was a new side of journalism to learn about, and an interesting one at the least. It shined light on a new field and introduced new writing techniques for me to take on.
Moving forward through my university experience, I realized that each course I’ve taken has only given me more skill and knowledge towards my professional career. Public relations was never even in my realm before I took the course, and I’m thrilled to be able to continue developing my skills and broaden my horizons.
